Landcare Legends to Celebrate Q150

Landcare Queensland needs your help to find Queensland’s Landcare Legends.

Thanks to a grant from the Q150 Community Funding Program, Landcare Queensland will be helping to celebrate Queensland’s one hundred and fiftieth birthday by ‘Celebrating the History of Landcare through Digital Storytelling’ during 2009.

Landcare Queensland will work with ten Landcare Legends to create short digital stories about their contribution to the landcare movement. The digital stories will be created using PlaceStories, digital storytelling software developed by community cultural development organisation Feral Arts. The completed Landcare Legends PlaceStories will then be hosted online at: http://landcareqld.placestoriesdev.com   for everyone to enjoy and will also be showcased at the 20th Queensland Landcare Conference being held in Longreach, October 2009 where an award will be presented to the best landcare legends story producer.

At Landcare Queensland we think that this is a great way to celebrate the success of the Landcare movement in Queensland but we need your help to make it happen! If you know a Landcare Legend in your area who you think deserves this accolade then we would love to hear from you.

Landcare Queensland is now calling for the landcare community in Queensland to nominate Landcare Legends from their local area. Landcare Legends can be either an individual or a group and will be supported by Landcare Queensland in creating and publishing their story.

To find out more or to nominate a Landcare Legend please contact Justin at Landcare Queensland on  justin@landcare.org.au   or  (07) 3211 4413.

Landcare PlaceStories

Landcare Queensland, in partnership with community cultural development and media organisation, Feral Arts can provide free training to Landcare facilitators, communication officers, volunteers and others interested in the use of the digital story-telling software, PlaceStories.

Landcare PlaceStories, as short visual clips, allows users to create and document on-line stories which showcase how they have made a difference to natural resource management in Queensland.

Completed stories are able to be loaded onto the Landcare PlaceStories webpage, allowing them to be viewed online. The stories can be distributed through Internet and email links with an aim to increase the uptake of sustainable NRM practices. People are already adopting this software as a key tool for documenting and promoting successful land management in a contemporary and easily accessible format.

The Landcare PlaceStories database will continue to be developed and used as an innovative communication, knowledge sharing and reporting tool capturing the many different facets of Landcare.

Throughout the year we will be holding PlaceStories training workshops across Queensland to help teach Queensland’s hard working landcare volunteers and coordinators how to record their inspirational achievements. Keep an eye on the website for further workshop announcements.

To see some stories that have already been produced check out the Landcare PlaceStories website: http://landcare.placestories.com.

The LANDCARE QUEENSLAND vision
Our vision is for a healthy and productive landscape where tourists and residents enjoy our rainforests, reefs and beaches; farmers enjoy productive, sustainable landscapes and vibrant rural towns; and our children can swim and fish in local creeks.

Our Mission
To ensure vibrant towns and cities of the future, with clean air; healthy soils and landscapes; and clean and abundant water, we need to learn to live and work differently.  To really look after the environment, people need information, support and financial assistance to make the right choices.

Landcare Queensland provides training, resources and funding for more than 60,000 people involved in Landcare throughout the state.

What do Landcare Groups do?
Landcare Groups are autonomous groups of people who get together to manage their local environment, using local solutions.  In Queensland there are more than 300 Landcare Groups.  These groups are working on projects such as:
  • facilitating neighbouring farmers to complete property plans;
  • bringing together Indigenous people to talk about caring for country and capturing traditional knowledge;
  • restocking creeks and rivers with native fish;
  • protecting and rebuilding habitat for endangered species such as the earless dragon; Mary River turtle; and bridled nail tail wallaby;
